Conference Information
The broadest mission of these Conferences is the collective pursuit of understanding of the issues surrounding screening for lung cancer, the main subissues being early diagnosis and early intervention. As this is the 20th Conference, its focus is on the knowledge gained from 10 years of collaborative international research and on the future directions of international collaboration within I-ELCAP.
The effectiveness of any screening program is a function of the quality of the organization, implementation, execution, and acceptability of each of its components. While the main focus is on the regimen and its consequent early diagnosis and intervention, it is also critical to develop guidelines and performance indicators to maximize the benefit and minimize potential harms of the regimen of screening.
Key topics in screening are the curability gain afforded by the regimen and its consequent early diagnosis and the development of treatment alternatives for small, early lung cancers that are diagnosed as a result of screening. I-ELCAP has therefore also developed the capacity to participate as a clinical trial network with other groups to evaluate treatment alternatives, including assessment of new surgical and nonsurgical technologies.
