The broadest mission of these Conferences is the collective pursuit of understanding of the issues surrounding screening for lung cancer, the main subissues being early diagnosis and early intervention. Any given Conference focuses on issues that are particularly topical at the time, including updates of research on and development pertaining to the practice of screening for lung cancer and related topics.
I-ELCAP has reported on the diagnostic performance of its regimen of screening for lung cancer as well as on the curability gain resulting from its consequent early diagnosis and treatment. As the NLST will soon provide its results on the reduction of mortality by the screening in its CT arm, it is time to seek understanding of the interrelation between curability gain and mortality reduction and the respective problems and solutions for these two approaches in order to gain a more cohesive and complete picture of the effectiveness of ELCAP-type action on early lung cancer. The Conference will also focus on the development of guidelines for screening practice.
With advances in CT scanners, thoracic imaging has markedly increased, primarily for cardiac scanning. We thus seek to learn the extent of such imaging, the responsibilities to report findings and to make recommendations, and the patterns of current practices in the work-up of the findings. The related added concern, naturally is that of what these practices ought to be.
